Objectif 6 : Clean Water and Sanitation
UCA actively promotes access to clean water and sustainable sanitation by integrating water-saving technologies on campus, raising awareness among students and local communities, and conducting research and projects that protect Morocco’s precious water resources for everyone.
Here is UCA in Action :
1-Treatment of Waste water :
We maintain a thorough wastewater treatment process through our dedicated National Center for Water and Energy Studies and Research (CNEREE)
Here are three standout examples of wastewater treatment projects turning waste into resources:
- Horizontal Planted Filter for Greywater Treatment in a School
- Wastewater Treatment & Reuse Station + Energy-Efficient Prototype Hall at UCA Law Faculty Annex
- Photobioreactor for Domestic Wastewater Treatment with Algae at Semlalia Faculty of Sciences

2-Sustainable Water Management :
UCA is fully committed to the sustainable management of water through the implementation of five strategic axes:
- Audit, monitoring and management
- Reduction of consumption
- Reuse and valorisation of water
- Awareness-raising, training and research
- Governance and evaluation.
These axes guarantee the prevention of any polluted water entering the natural or public systems, including in the event of accidents or incidents, while optimising consumption and promoting the reuse of treated water.
All the details of these actions, indicators and results are presented in the official report.

3-Free Drinking Water
Across all faculties, schools and public areas, free drinking fountains and refill stations are available 24/7 to students, staff and visitors.

4-Campus Landscapes
UCA plants and maintains its green spaces using only drought-tolerant native and adapted species that require minimal irrigation once established, significantly reducing overall campus water consumption while preserving biodiversity and shade for the community.

5-Educating the Public on How to Safeguard Every Drop
In order to provide local communities, schools, and citizens with direct access to our researchers’ and students’ knowledge of sustainable water management, UCA opens its doors and shares its expertise.
Emphasis event:
Water4Future Hackathon, January 23 and 24, 2025, Marrakech
UCA master’s and engineering students as well as young professionals collaborate with the UNESCO International Centre for Water (ICIREWARD-Montpellier) to develop practical solutions for water conservation, reuse, and smart governance.
Local government agencies and non-governmental organisations are given the best projects to implement right away.
This is just one of many free workshops, school visits, farmer training days and public conferences that UCA organises every year to share knowledge on good water practices with everyone in the Marrakech-Safi region.
