SDG 13 : climate action

1/ Galilei Club – Faculty of Sciences and Techniques of Gueliz (FSTG)

Founded in 2022, the Galilei Club is dedicated to promoting astronomy, scientific curiosity, and environmental awareness within the academic community and beyond. By blending observation, research, and education,
the club fosters a deeper appreciation for the cosmos while encouraging students to explore the intersection between science, society, and sustainability. Through its programs, the Galilei Club creates opportunities
for discovery, dialogue, and hands-on learning, strengthening the culture of scientific exploration at the University of Cadi Ayyad.

Signature Initiatives:

  • Marrakech Astronomy Festival 2023: A flagship event gathering students, researchers, and astronomy enthusiasts to celebrate scientific discovery through conferences, workshops, and live
  • stargazing sessions.
  • Astronomy Conferences: Specialized talks exploring themes such as science and human resources, cosmic wanderings, and the role of astronomy in understanding humanity’s place in the universe.
  • Starry Sky Exploration: Interactive nights organized in collaboration with associations like 3AM, where participants observe the night sky and discuss recent astronomical discoveries.

Highlight Events:

  • Green 2.0: A program featuring hands-on workshops and activities aimed at equipping students with practical skills while linking environmental awareness to the study of science and astronomy.
  • Science Fairs and Night Observations: Engaging events highlighting the future of astronomy in Morocco, offering participants both scientific discussions and the chance to observe celestial phenomena directly.

Responsible Waste Management at UCA

As part of its strong commitment to sustainable development, the University of Cadi Ayyad has adopted a comprehensive strategy for responsible waste management across all of its campuses. This initiative reflects the university’s dedication to protecting natural resources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and creating an environmentally conscious academic environment.

The program is built around a clear vision: reduce, sort, revalue, and educate. Through this approach, UCA not only minimizes its environmental footprint but also instills values of sustainability within its student community and academic partners.

Strategic Objectives

The waste management policy focuses on several key goals:

  • Reducing waste at the source through awareness campaigns and responsible consumption.
  • Implementing selective sorting and creating facilities to optimize recycling processes.
  • Encouraging composting and re-use of digital equipment.
  • Promoting eco-responsible events to strengthen collective awareness.
  • Monitoring progress with clear performance indicators to ensure measurable impact.

Flagship Initiatives

Concrete measures have already been put in place to translate this vision into action:

  • Selective Sorting: Introduction of compartmentalized bins in university buildings.
  • Central Sorting Facility: Establishment of a dedicated site for efficient waste management.
  • Composting Unit: Conversion of organic waste from cafeterias into usable compost.
  • Reusable Bottles and Mugs: Distribution to reduce single-use plastics on campus.
  • Digital Reuse: Refurbishment of computers and electronic devices for continued use.
  • Awareness Campaigns: Eco-responsible events, student competitions, and training sessions that place sustainability at the heart of campus life.

Governance and Monitoring

The program is overseen by a dedicated Green Committee that ensures effective implementation and continuous improvement. Performance is evaluated through specific indicators, including the volume of waste reduced, recycled, or composted. A periodic review guarantees that the policy evolves in line with both regulatory requirements and emerging sustainability challenges.

Collective Responsibility

The success of this policy depends on the active involvement of the entire UCA community. Students, faculty, researchers, and staff are all called upon to participate in building a greener and more sustainable university. By leading these efforts, UCA positions itself as a model of environmental responsibility, both nationally and internationally.
